Some of their Stories
My name is Juan Carlos González Solano, I was born on June 12, 2001 in the city of Ixtepec approximately 6 hours from the city of Oaxaca, however, most of my life I have been living in the city of Oaxaca. My story at the CEI began in 2008 when I began studying the 2nd year of primary education. During the course of these years my family and I have gone through a series of difficulties. My parents are people who lack education, my mother has dedicated most of her life to selling handmade tortillas, while my father is a farmer. The first difficulty we had to face was when my father had an accident at work, which left him with a motor disability, he lost an arm and a leg, since then we have had a series of economic difficulties, because he cannot have a stable work. There were times when we only ate once a day, and for all of our lives we have been living in a house made of tin, which has flooded in the rainy season, and in the cold season our house did not protect us from the cold, so, I used to get sick a lot because I suffer from asthma. We also do not have a stove or gas, we have always prepared food using a wood-burning bracero. The place where we live is unpopulated, there are not many houses. Since we arrived, most of it is mountain and there were no electricity, shops, or any other public services. Currently we still lack drinking water, it has been one of our biggest problems, because water trucks sell the water at a very high price.
I have an older sister, who was also supported by the CEI and who finished her degree as a Primary Education teacher. I have already managed to finish the degree, now the next objective will be to continue growing professionally and be able to have economic stability, to be able to start a family business and apply all my knowledge from the degree I completed: IN BUSINESS INNOVATION AND MARKETING.

I started my second year of high school when I was accepted into the CEI program. Since then, my parents' workload decreased a little thanks to the support of this organization. My mother worked cleaning houses every day from morning to afternoon/evening and my father works as a bricklayer. We are a family of four, so when my sister started high school and in order not to bother my parents by asking them for money for commuting to university, I decided to work in a small cyber cafe. It was an easy job that allowed me to pay at least for my commuting expenses for almost 2 years, then I decided to leave this job because I started working in an office of one of my university professors, although this was also in order to learn a little more about the degree that I am about to finish, Law. Today I know that I want to be a defense lawyer, focus more on crimes of discrimination towards the LGBTQ+ community and discrimination against women because of some friends that I met in the last five years in the specialized Prosecutor's Office of the state of Oaxaca, where I did my obligatory social service, I learned that in many cases many people with limited economic resources do not receive the appropriate advice, and because of this type of injustice I want to defend all those whom “justice” ignores.
Berenice Candido Jimenez, Itandehui
I am Marisela Carpio Ángeles, I entered the CEI when I started the first year of kindergarten when I was 4 years old. From a very young age I had the dream of being a doctor, however, I was disappointed because I was not accepted by the University to study medicine. I had the idea of working in a cafeteria and studying a Bachelor's degree in nursing. Thanks to my parents, who are dedicated to selling tacos in a street stall even at an advanced age, in addition to the fact that my mother dedicated herself to washing and ironing other people's clothes to be able to support my 4 brothers and me. The second year after starting my Bachelor's degree in nursing, the COVID pandemic happened, so this brought a very difficult blow to my family's economic situation, since my parents could not sell tacos. At my job the salary went down, the shifts were shortened among other things. Because of this, I was going to decide to stop studying. However, thanks to the help of the CEI, I continued and here I am finishing my degree in Nursing. My next goal is to support the people of those towns in the state of Oaxaca, where there are no medical services, and in this way contribute and have the opportunity to repay everything to the different people who believed in me, and thanks to the CEI.
Marisela Carpio Angeles
Hello, I am Milca Rebeca Reyes Palestino, I'm lucky to have been born in the city of Oaxaca de Juárez, I have lived here all my life, in Xoxocotlán. When I entered the CEI I was in the first year of high school, it was very helpful for my family since the expenses were high. I come from a family of 8 children. When I studied my degree I had to go through a lack of economic resources, and that's why I had to work at a stationery store after school, I worked as a babysitter for 6 months, I worked in a clothing store, all my jobs have been temporary because college sometimes required more time. Thanks to the help of my parents and the CEI, we were able to get by with all my daily school expenses: transportation, food, various school supplies, because we are 8 siblings and we were all studying. Only two of my brothers are of working age. Before I get my BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN PEDAGOGY, and while I am waiting to be officially hired to go work in a community, I will work temporarily teaching. I know that they commonly send us to communities very far from the city of Oaxaca where there is no efficient transportation, and that is why I will travel 6 or more hours. But I am still excited to perform well because I am prepared. I greatly appreciate all the support that my godmother has given me through the CEI, since it made many things easier in my studies.

I was born in Oaxaca in the central valleys, here in Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, just 30 minutes from the center of Oaxaca City, Oax. The first time I entered the CEI was when I was 6 years old.
I studied a Bachelor's degree in nursing because in this way I help all the people who need me in difficult times when they are not healthy. It was very difficult for me in the third semester of high school when I lost my father. It was a very big loss, I had difficulties moving forward, it cost me too much since it affected me emotionally and psychologically, well, after that I had to move forward despite everything, I did not give up, I completed my studies, since I promised my father to finish a bachelor's degree- I thank my mother and my brothers and the CEI who have not left me alone in this mission. I had my internship at the Hospital Civil in Oaxaca de Juárez, it went well, although I was afraid of making mistakes. But that didn't stop me from continuing to fight for this dream to fulfill. With all my heart I thank the CEI for supporting me all these years. And I will still continue studying because I haven't gotten my degree, and a specialty that I plan to pursue.
